Synulox is a prescription antibiotic available as a palatable tablet you can give by hand or hide in food. It combines two active ingredients: amoxicillin trihydrate and clavulanic acid.
Some bacteria produce protective enzymes called beta-lactamases that break down standard penicillin-type antibiotics before they can do their job. Clavulanic acid disables those protective enzymes, leaving the amoxicillin completely free to attack and kill the bacteria. This mechanism allows Synulox to work against a much broader range of infections than amoxicillin on its own.
The tablets are circular and pink, with a break line on one face and “SYNULOX” engraved on the other, blended into a palatable yeast base that most pets will accept readily, even when they are feeling unwell.
Strengths & Target Species
Standard dosing is 12.5 mg/kg twice daily. Species licensing varies by tablet strength:
- Synulox 50 mg: licensed for cats and small dogs
- Synulox 250 mg: licensed for medium-to-large dogs
- Synulox 500 mg: licensed strictly for dogs only, not licensed or safe for cats due to its high concentration and large physical size.

What specific conditions does Synulox treat?
It is licensed in the UK to treat deep and superficial pyoderma, wounds, abscesses, anal sacculitis, gingivitis, periodontal infections, acute and recurrent cystitis, upper/lower respiratory tract infections, and bacterial enteritis. It is explicitly not indicated for infections caused by Pseudomonas species.
Who should NOT use Synulox?
Never administer to rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, or gerbils, as penicillin-type antibiotics cause severe, fatal gastrointestinal ecosystem disturbances in small herbivores.
