What Is Vetmedin?
Vetmedin (pimobendan) is a prescription-only medicine used to help manage heart disease in dogs. It's prescribed by vets to support heart function and help improve day-to-day quality of life.
What Conditions Does Vetmedin Treat?
Vetmedin is commonly prescribed for dogs with heart conditions such as congestive heart failure (CHF), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and mitral valve disease. Your vet will confirm whether Vetmedin is suitable based on your dog's individual diagnosis.
How Does Vetmedin Work?
Vetmedin is known as an inodilator. It helps the heart contract more effectively while also easing blood flow, which together can reduce the strain on a struggling heart.
How long does it take to work?
This varies from dog to dog — some show improvement within days, others take longer. Your vet is best placed to advise on what to expect for your dog specifically.
How is Vetmedin administered?
At Ashcroft 4 Pets, we currently dispense Vetmedin as chewable tablets (1.25mg, 2.5mg, 5mg, and 10mg) and 5mg hard capsules. Your vet will confirm the form and strength suited to your dog.
Can Vetmedin be used with other medications?
Vetmedin is often prescribed alongside other heart medications. Always tell your vet about everything else your dog is taking so they can check for interactions.
Is Vetmedin Safe?
Vetmedin is generally well tolerated when used exactly as prescribed and in line with the product data sheet. As with any prescription medicine, some dogs may experience side effects. These are usually mild and often settle with a dosage adjustment. Always speak to your vet about the risks and benefits for your dog.
Possible side effects can include:
- Increased heart rate
- Diarrhoea
- Lethargy
- Reduced appetite
What should I do if my dog has side effects?
Contact your vet if you notice any side effects. They can advise on next steps, which may include adjusting the dose or reviewing the treatment plan.
Can I get Vetmedin without a prescription?
No. Vetmedin is a POM-V (Prescription Only Medicine – Veterinary) and can only be supplied against a prescription from a registered vet. Be cautious of any source offering it without one.
