Most flea treatments don't kill fleas instantly. Knowing how they actually work can help you avoid giving an unnecessary second dose, which can do more harm than good. **Quick answer:** oral flea treatments start working in 2–4 hours; topical spot-ons take about 12 hours. Most fleas are cleared within 24–48 hours either way. Usually, it's not safe. Flea treatments are dosed for your pet's weight, and giving another dose too soon raises the risk of side effects. If you think the treatment isn't working, check the reasons below before giving another dose — and if you're still unsure, talk to your vet. ### Signs of a flea treatment overdose Contact your vet straight away if you notice any of the following after applying a flea product: - Excessive drooling - Vomiting - Tremors or twitching - Unusual agitation or restlessness - Itchy skin, hives, or biting at the treated area - Weakness or difficulty breathing ## How long does flea treatment take to work? How quickly a flea treatment works depends on the type. So even if it looks like the treatment isn't working, it's actually doing its job each time a new flea appears. ## Why it might seem like flea treatment isn't working If you're still seeing fleas after the expected time, it's usually not the product's fault. Here are the most common reasons, in roughly the order we see them. ### You're applying it incorrectly Topical treatments need to reach your pet's skin, not just sit on the fur. Part the coat until you see skin, and use the entire tube — the dose is based on the full amount reaching your pet. ### The dose doesn't match your pet's current weight Flea treatments are dosed by weight. If your pet's weight has changed recently — especially for puppies, kittens, or pets on a diet — using an old weight could mean giving too much or too little. ### Not every pet in the house is treated Untreated housemates, including indoor-only cats, can reintroduce fleas even if your treated pet is fully protected. ### The product has expired or been stored badly Most flea treatments have a shelf life of a couple of years. Vacuum often, wash your pet's bedding in hot water, and for a big infestation consider a household spray with an insect growth regulator. ### It was washed off before it had time to dry Bathing, swimming, or heavy rain too soon after applying a topical treatment can make it less effective. Check your product's label for how long to wait before bathing — this varies by brand but is usually 24–48 hours. ## How to apply topical flea treatment correctly - Confirm the product is licensed for your pet's species and current weight. - Read the label — most treatments are applied in one spot, but some need several points along your pet's back. - Part the fur at the base of the neck or between the shoulder blades until you see skin. - Apply the full tube directly to the skin, not the fur. - Keep pets separated if they groom each other, until the area is dry. - Avoid bathing or swimming for the period stated on your product's label. - Wash your hands after application. **Watch for drooling, vomiting, tremors or skin irritation** after application, and contact your vet if you see any. ## How close together can you give flea treatments? Only give flea treatments as often as the label says.
